Blackpool Half Marathon 2026
In his first race since 2018, Deano the Dementiasaurus returned to run the Blackpool Half Marathon 2026 to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Since Deano’s last run 8 years ago, Alzheimer’s has become a very real and personal part of his life. Last year, Deano’s Mam – and biggest supporter – was herself diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This came as a great shock for Deano, as his Mam had always been such a healthy and active person, even completing the Great North Run and the Liverpool Half Marathon alongside Deano. While Mam is still in the early stages of the illness, and still enjoys her daily activities, it has been painful to watch as everyday tasks that once felt automatic - remembering plans, following steps, finding the right words - become increasingly difficult.
As you'd expect, Deano's Mam was constantly on his mind as he ran past Blackpool Tower, the pier, illuminations and all the other sights of this fabulous seaside resort. It wasn't an easy run, with the seaside winds almost blowing Deano's head clean off his body, but the support of the wonderful people of Blackpool who came out to line the streets and cheer Deano's name kept him going for 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Dementia is one of the fastest growing illnesses around the world. Worldwide, over 55 million people have dementia, with projections of 78 million by 2030. Dementia became the UK's leading cause of death in 2017, overtaking heart disease for the first time. At current rates, the number of people with dementia in the UK will soar to 1.4 million by 2040. However, Alzheimer’s Research UK is working towards earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and ultimately a cure, which is why Deano is proud to support their work. Please donate and together let’s drive dementia to extinction! Thank you!
